Maureen ( Mo) Connolly of North Venice, Florida passed away on April 26, 2026 surrounded by family and friends.
Mo was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and graduated from Pittsfield, HS. She was an outstanding basketball player breaking records for her uncanny ability as well as an honor student. After attending Boston University Sargent College she taught Physical Education in Braintree, Massachusetts. She went on to complete her master’s degree at University of North Carolina/Greensboro. Her professional life was marked with success as a dedicated teacher, well respected and loved coach, and mentored and inspired so many young students. Throughout her retired years as she met former students they all exclaimed “Miss Connolly, you were the best”. For over 30 years Mo gave of herself in her profession and was dedicated to the field of Physical Education. Mo was also the recipient of the Twiness Award from Boston University Sargent College. The award recognizes alumnus who are worthy of the honor for their exceptional character and professionalism. It is one of the premier awards bestowed by the Sargent College Alumni Association.
Mo was an avid skier in her younger days, hitting the slopes throughout the US and Canada. She was an avid golfer and embraced the sport in; not only hitting the links; but also organizing many tournaments. She was a former Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts Golf Chairperson and President of the Braintree MA Ladies Golf Association. After moving to Venice, FL, she was deeply involved in her local golf community at Waterford Golf Club. She served in leadership roles within the ladies’ golf organization where her vision, commitment and spirit helped grow the organization and inspire players of all skill levels. Known for her encouragement and mentorship, she welcomed newcomers warmly and championed opportunities for all members. Her leadership left a lasting impact, strengthening both the organization and the friendships within it.
Beyond the course, Mo enjoyed and was passionate for all sports, especially her favorite Boston teams. She was known for her humor, generosity and resilience. She brought people together and created a sense of belonging wherever she went.
She is survived by her spouse, Mary Abbruzzese, of North Venice. She leaves in Virginia her brother William and his wife Marcia Connolly, niece Marianne Connolly, Melissa Zovak and her husband Chris, and Mark Connolly and his wife Paige and niece Maura Staten and her husband Mark in Nevada. Mo also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will always fondly think of Aunt Mo.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Ospry, FL. On May 8, 2026 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to First Tee – Sarasota/Manatee Memorial Donations: https://firstteesarasotamanatee.org/charitable-contribution/, in honor of her enduring love for the game and her community.
There will be a celebration of life at 3:00 PM Waterford Golf Club, 1454 Gleneagles Dr. Venice, FL 34292. All are welcome to attend in the attire Mo could always be seen wearing, golf clothes, favorite team shirt, and casual.

She impacted our lives with her steady, loving calm. (Tried to keep me calm on the golf course!)
She’s watching over us now and fully engaged with her sports teams.

Mo was one of the most consistently happy people I have had the pleasure to know! My husband, Gary, and I enjoyed cheering for many a Red Sox game with no and Mary. And Mary will maintain MO’s positive spirit… but Mo will be missed. Maureen and Gary Barnes
